Career Highlights

  • Built Streamline Electronics - a business that recycled and refurbished faulty electronic components for handheld consumer electronic devices, supplying electronics repair centres globally
  • Studied Physics at University College London
  • Joined Heteronomics as founding engineer, where I spearheaded the transformation of the tech platform, migrating operations and services to cloud-native apps on AWS. This contribution to Heteronomics' platform was instrumental in enabling the company to scale its client base to hundreds of portfolio managers and traders (with combined assets under management value of USD 19.4 trillion)
  • Worked as a team lead in the data engineering function at Zilch, re-architected data ingestion pipelines - implemented an event-driven pattern, leading to a ten-fold reduction in data ingestion latency
  • Technical lead on AI-powered bond pricing data scraper at Brevan Howard, expanding global market coverage
  • IC with the remit of supporting Meta’s Access Review Operations to meet SOX/SOC2 compliance obligations

My journey

From solo business owner, to startup founding engineer, to scaleups, hedge funds and big tech
I love building things
I started my first business at the age of seventeen, while in high school. The business model was initially focussed on purchasing faulty electronics (tablets, laptops and phones), and recycling the functional components by selling them to electronics repair companies across the world, with the mission of minimising electronic waste.
I successfully applied for a business funding for my company at nineteen. After multiple iterations of the business model, I implemented software automation strategies to enable the company to become increasingly autonomous, with less requirement of my day-to-day managerial input, while I attended university.

Startups

I was the founding engineer at Heteronomics, a fintech company with a focus on leveraging cloud platforms to deliver richer macroeconomic forecasts. I oversaw the development of Heteronomics’ cloud infrastructure on AWS as well as the flagship ML-driven inflation forecasting framework. This contribution to Heteronomics' platform was instrumental in enabling the company to scale its client base to hundreds of portfolio managers and traders (with a combined assets under management value of USD 19.4 trillion).
  • Implemented MLOps framework for automated training and model deployment
  • Led the transformation project of Heteronomics’ legacy infrastructure from manual workflows to modern Software Development Lifecycle principles
  • Oversaw the adoption of DevOps practices, enabling our small team to scale more ambitously

Scale ups

The overall improvement in the reliability of the data platform was critically important to enable Zilch to fulfil its responsibility of generating accurate financial reports for its investors on a daily basis, as well as helping sales and business development teams to provide up-to-date metrics when pitching.
  • Re-architected data ingestion patterns to use an event-driven approach, leading to a ten-fold reduction in data ingestion latency. The modular design reduced the marginal cost and engineering time of onboarding new data pipelines.
  • Achieved 60% month-on-month AWS cost reductions within the data platform by optimising AWS cloud workflows
  • Designed a data quality framework to take Zilch's data platform to the next level of maturity
You might think that like many engineers, I gravitate towards unnecessarily complex systems, but at Zilch, I devoted more energy to providing constructive pushback against complex, over engineered solutions whenever I envisioned a simple and effective solution that met the requirements. As I levelled up my mindset to a senior engineer level, I became increasingly keen to optimise for maintainability rather than to “impress” with my complex solution.

Big tech

At more established firms, naturally, KPIs are totally different from the startup and scale-up stage. Compliance burdens are more onerous, stakeholders more numerous - in short, even small changes can have wide reaching consequences. That’s why, at Meta, I had to adapt to a different mindset. As a consultant, I focused on enhancing safeguards, validation rules, test coverage, and change safety protocols as part of my work in helping Meta meet its SOX/SOC2 obligations.
